And to walk through a field of cow pies. Not to mention wade through a flock of squawking omnivorous birds. Romantic? Well, the foray into the Panoche Valley to visit the Douglas Ranch and Our Family Farm, neighbors in remote and beautiful Paicines, was plenty dreamy. Luscious green pastures, emerald hills, blue skies, and happy, healthy animals, plus hay bale buildings, a donkey, frolicking children- what could be more romantic than such a bucolic scene, at least for two farmers striving for their own version of pastoral bliss? We are working on forging a lasting partnership with these two farms to supply you with the very best in pasture raised meats and eggs. Because they are neighbors and work together, we can streamline delivery of their products to our distribution center, thereby reducing carbon costs and expenses. And all the animals on these farms work in symbiosis with the ecosystem and each other, a perfect example of a sustainable farm operation.

If you are alarmed by feedlot beef, disgusted by cage grown animals, fearful of meat packing warehouses, this is the only realistic solution. Small scale organic family farmers raising beautiful, strong animals outdoors on natural green grass. Conveniently packaged, frozen fresh, these products are unlike anything in supermarkets, even their so-called organic meats. The difference is pasture!

Our plants are thriving right now, the wet weather and mild temperatures in Half Moon Bay, even in winter, dramatically improving our winter farming production. Greenhouses have really made a difference. With your support, Aurora and I are trying out exciting new seed varieties and relentlessly forging ahead with our dream of being organic farmers, in tune with nature, at peace with our surroundings. Sure, inspecting piles of animal poop may sound like we’re a couple of romantics on a pleasure cruise, but we’re willing to do it for you. We’ve got boots.

Follow us on Twitter produce at this year's Farmer's Market, which opened May 21 in Downtown Hollister. "I've had a very privileged life," Hamilton said. "I've gotten to see a lot of things." Hamilton taught English in Hollister's sister city, Takino, Japan, and traveled across Russia, Siberia, Mongolia, China and Europe.
Hamilton and his partner Aurora Wilson spent nearly a year in New Zealand. "I worked for about a dozen farms through a program called Willing Workers on Organic Farms," Hamilton said. "It was just a good opportunity for me and Aurora to see what different people are doing." After returning to the United States, Hamilton worked as a gardener on George Lucas' Skywalker Ranch in San Francisco. "It's kind of weird that I used my film degree to grow melons for Darth Vader," Hamilton said. Hamilton received a degree in film and digital media from the University of California, Santa Cruz. Andrew Ihley, an organic farmer on Skywalker Ranch, taught him the morals and methods of organic farming. "Without his profound mentorship, I would not be able to farm on my own," Hamilton said, in an e-mail.

Hamilton wanted to pursue a simpler lifestyle. "I realized I was living a sort of carbon-intensive lifestyle," Hamilton said. "I think, maybe return home and sort of balance the equation." Hamilton grew up in San Benito County. "My dad moved us from Los Angeles to a little house right around here in Tres Pinos," Hamilton said. "A lot of people from my generation wanted to get the hell out, but I think there's opportunity here."

Hamilton and Wilson are growing on three acres at Paul Hain's ranch, Hain Ranch Organics. "In exchange for me helping him, he's giving me this land," Hamilton said. "This was sort of just a dead field here." Hamilton grows cut flowers and a variety of produce, including heirloom fingerling potatoes, carrots and corn. "I'm actually growing things that I like to eat, and seeing how it goes," Hamilton said. His first job was growing apricots on the ranch next door. "I think, at this scale, you can kind of balance things," Hamilton said. "I looked everywhere in California to find a situation." Hain Ranch Organics is nestled in the rolling hills that surround Tres Pinos. "I was on that bluff up there with my buddy," Hamilton said. "He pointed down here and he said, 'That's Paul Hain's ranch.'" Hamilton cornered Hain. "He did," Hain said. "He was lurking."

The ranch had everything Hamilton was looking for. Hain produces organic chicken, eggs and walnuts. The baby chicks live in a corrugated metal shed. The floor is lined with pine shavings. When composted, the chicken manure and pine shavings make a rich fertilizer, Hamilton said. He uses the compost to start seeds. He uses the brown paper bags from the organic chicken feed to line the furrows of his plot. The bags decompose naturally. "Literally everything you see over here has been recycled from other uses," Hamilton said. From a local gas station he retrieved cases from soda bottles. Hamilton uses those to start seeds. He constructed tables for his seed trays from old lumber. His irrigation system was salvaged from a farm that shut down. Purchased new, the drip tubes would have cost thousands. "All this hose, it was just lying in the fields," Hamilton said. "I was actually able to start a small scale farm with almost no money." One person can farm two or three acres by themselves, Hamilton said.
Hamilton does not rely on many of the standard practices of modern farming. "It's certainly a lot more physical work," Hamilton said, "But I think we rely a lot less on tractors and giant combines."Local organic farmer Paul Hamilton talks about his crops that will be sold at the Hollister Farmers' Market this year.

http://www.pinnaclenews.com/news/contentview.asp?c=243742

Left Behind... You may have the proper visas, but do you have enough of them?

By Paul Oscar Hamilton

I could not have felt more helpless. I was standing in Hong Kong. My girlfriend was standing in China. We could clearly see the other’s desperate expression. But we could not touch. We'd run out of visas.

Hong Kong is now a part of China, as we all know, the British having long since handed over ownership. Despite the slogans, the two are not one. It is a nation divided by officers in hats, a bureaucratic line more impassible than the crumbling Great Wall. And I wish we’d known that a lot earlier.

Our plan had been to travel by rail through China, from Beijing to Hong Kong then back out on our way to Vietnam via Cambodia. With the understanding that Hong Kong and China were one country we naively expected to need only one entry visa to China- the thinking being that by going to Hong Kong we would not be leaving China proper and subsequently need no further permission to re-enter. We’d boarded the bus from Hong Kong after a lovely few days exploring that dynamic, international city. Heading to Shenzhen, the exploding border town that came into being with reunification, our packs seemed heavy in the sweltering humidity, especially after a respite of carefree wandering with little more to carry than our appetites and sunglasses. But the overland journey ahead excited our imaginations, as we'd be plunging into the interior wilds of the Far East.

Aurora, my paramour and intrepid guide, breezed through the border checkpoint, her male agent giving her a salutatory farewell. My border agent, a smiling female in stiff uniform appeared more circumspect in her appraisal. She asked me if I travelled a lot. Proud of my worldliness , I replied haughtily that yes indeed I had been fortunate to have been to many exotic locales. She quipped in her straightforward and polite English that that being the case, possibly I should have understood the simple need of proper documentation to transgress international borders. I pointed out that I was in possession of the necessary visa to enter China. She disagreed.

“You had the necessary visa to enter China once, but you do not have the necessary visa to enter again.”

“What country am I in now?”

“You are in China.”

“What country am I trying to enter?”

“China.”

“What country did I leave in order to enter China?”

“China.”

“Then maybe you can understand my dilemma. How could I have known that I would need separate visas to enter China from China?”

“You are a world traveler. You should know these things.”

I sat on that thought for a moment. A gift of Eastern Wisdom, perhaps? I looked through the Plexiglas at Aurora. My lovely girl. Standing there. Free.

“Well, why’d you let her through?”

I pointed at the red-haired beauty standing a few paces behind her, innocently waiting. The agent turned around to look. It took about two seconds for the guards to be alerted and for my sweet angel to have been cursorily expelled from China back into China. To this day her passport bares the scar of a cancelled stamp. My border agent informed her superior of her counterpart’s sloppy work and at least fifteen other agents stopped their transactions to stand up from their seated posts, point mockingly at the shamefaced culprit and publicly humiliate him with rebukes and taunts. Effective peer counseling, I thought to myself. Would that fly in the west? We were soon directed to another line, at the culmination of which we were redirected back from whence we’d come. No one wanted to deal with us. The only solution was to return to Hong Kong and apply for visas there. Unfortunately it was Labor Week and no governmental offices were open for a number of days and to expedite visa service would have been prohibitively expensive, not to mention the attendant costs of room and board at a moment’s notice. We settled on ditching the whole idea and simply flying to Vietnam, saving Cambodia for a later date. We slept the night on the couch of our kind hostelier’s living room. His rooms were all booked.

Ironically, as we headed out of the station to collect our luggage from the waiting bus that was to have continued the journey we could have simply got back on and gone with them. No one was looking. But I knew eventually at the next stop some such, and probably worse, debacle would have awaited us.

So it is with much hard won experience that I recommend delving as deeply as possible into your destination of choice’s arcane, inexplicable, anachronistic, oxymoronic regulations so you don’t end up standing with your passport in your hand.

And never rat out your partner to the authorities. They’ll never let you forget it.

Read more of Paul Oscar Hamilton's work at http://www.ourmanly.com.au/

Italy

Bodie, America's Best Ghost Town

America's Best Ghost Town

Quietly evocative remnants of California's Gold Rush and Wild West past lure intrepid travelers off the beaten path.

Red and gold leafed aspens sigh and whisper in the Autumn breeze, the brilliant clear blue sky devoid of tumult, and the pale yellow straw dry under hoof. Travelers to California's Sierra Nevada mountain range often limit themselves to the western side, with its magnificent big trees and the rightly renowned Yosemite. But it is the eastern province bordering Nevada that true afficionados of alpine and high desert beauty find surpassingly magnificent vistas.

And nestled in a quiet valley accessed by a steep, and partially unpaved road, is California's best preserved and largest ghost town, Bodie. Stark against the tawny scrub, Bodie's long since inhabited buildings, shacks and petrol pumps jut skyward defiantly against a savage sun and winter's onslaught.

Doomed by the Great Depression and fire, Bodie's final residents gave up and fled in 1932, leaving their belongings, their homes and their ghosts to fend for themselves in the deep snow and blistering high desert heat. Visitors now can look through the warped glass windows and see the lives and times of these long gone Americans. The General Store is particularly well preserved and the small museum enlightening. But it is the haunting mill atop the hill, the rusting tins and the beautiful ancient wood buildings, long shed of their painted faces, that evoke the spirit of this desolate and peaceful place. It is hard to imagine this boom town was a notorious den of iniquity; murderous thugs and harlots were keen for miners' gold. It was a lawless and wild place once, and fabulously productive, but now the smattering of dedicated visitors silently step among the silent ruins, ruminating on a piece of history as it ever so slowly disappears in time.

Bodie is off California's greatest highway, U.S. 395, and close to the unique saltwater Mono Lake and world class trout fishing and outdoor recreation. The road to Bodie is not cleared of snow so is best visited in more temperate seasons. Visit Bodie State Park for the best and most accurate information. Local accomodations abound, especially recommended is The Bridgeport Inn. Bodie can be easily accessed from Los Angeles or San Francisco and could easily be paired with a memorable visit to Death Valley.

Up to date Eastern Sierra images and conditions can be found at Sierra Fall Color Report.

Read more of Paul Oscar Hamilton at www.ourmanly.com.au
