The San Francisco Bay Area’s Best CSA?
What does it take to be the San Francisco Bay Area’s “best” CSA?
Greenhearts Family Farm is just a small part of a growing trend for more sustainable agriculture. We advocate for and support small farms and community based organizations.
But when it comes to putting your money down for a weekly CSA box, we believe there is no better choice than Greenhearts Family Farm. Here’s why!
The Bay Area’s Top Rated CSA
Along with my partner Aurora, I run Greenhearts Family Farm – The Farmer’s Market Delivered, the Bay Area’s premium CSA. We have a passion for sustainably managed agriculture, integrating pasture raised animals into orchards and row crops. We have been very fortunate to have studied with, learned from, apprenticed under and worked for some of the pioneering organic farmers around the world. And our current associations with the foremost practitioners of organics keeps us energized and constantly evolving.
Aurora and I farm a small coastside acreage in Half Moon Bay, growing seasonally appropriate row crops with a carbon sensitive approach. We till lightly, preferring to grow pasture in our furrows instead of cultivating, as is the habit on conventional row crop farms. We use very little electricity, minimal water, no plastic mulches and very little fuel. The majority of our irrigationequipment is re-used from other farms that simply throw it away after a season. We re-use our drip lines year after year.
Recycle, Re-use, Re-purpose
That has always been the Greenhearts mantra. If we can forgo a costly new item by reusing a perfectly good used one, then we do. Our lean, effecient and streamlined growing operation is a marvel of frugality and resourcefulness. We do not waste!
What About the Food?
A CSA box is still about the food!
Growing and delivering organic vegetables and fruit and pasture raised, free range beef, pork, organic chicken and eggs to folk’s homes and offices around the Bay Area is our business. We are constantly searching for effeciencies and carbon cost cutting measures. But just as important as how we do it, is what we are putting in our CSA box. Where does our organic produce come from? Are other farmers as committed to sustainable agriculture as we are? Are they going “beyond organic“?
Going Beyond Organic
Local, Small Farms in the Bay Area Practicing Sustainable Agriculture
When you’ve been farming long enough, and have spent time on some of the world’s finest organic farms, you begin to know the difference between good and better. Just about any organic farm is a step in the right direction, but some local farmers are going “beyond organic”. We support these local farmers first because they consistently grow the very best crops with the least amount of waste and energy consumption. They employ the best labor practices, regenerate soil, minimize water waste, protect local fauna and support the community.

Paul, I heard you on NPR this morning. I was particularly interested in your comments about the spiritual dimensions of raising animals for slaughter. My partner and I are very interested in organic and sustainable farming techniques. We recently purchased a small rural property in Washington and would be interested in visiting your farm and learning about any references you may have about raising and integrating free range poultry in a small farm setting. We currently have a free range flock of about 20 hens in Oakland hills (of all places), and they will be coming with us to WA. Any ideas or suggestions about source material would be sincerely appreciated.
